Palliative Care

Dr. Sandeep Bhagat is a palliative medicine specialist and Head of Unit-Palliative Care at Peninsula Health. He is an adjunct lecturer at Peninsula Clinical School (Monash University).  Dr Bhagat has worked in community and in-patient palliative care over rural and metropolitan settings for many years. He is the chair of the End of Life Care (EoLC) sub-committee of Peninsula Health that aims to promote the EoLC as per people’s wishes across the health service and region.

“Sandeep focuses on research that can be clinically translated to improve the supportive care of elderly people in particular and palliative care of all in general.”

Community engagement and participation: Dr Bhagat is a board member of Palliative Care Victoria that has strong connections with consumer organisations and health services. He works closely with the oncology and other specialities promoting the concept of early supportive care and advance care planning.

Supervision and mentoring: Dr Bhagat is a supervisor for basic physician trainees and advance physician trainees undertaking specialist training or experience in Palliative Medicine. He has supervised many physician trainees over the years including mentoring and supervising their research requirements.

Peer review involvement: Dr Bhagat is a reviewer for Journal of Palliative Medicine. He is currently undertaking a study approved by the Peninsula Health Human Research Ethics Committee to explore referrals to supportive and palliative care in order to provide early care as well as improve care of dying.
