Type 2 diabetes is associated with an increased risk of dementia in later life. This project aims to understand the pathways linking type 2 diabetes with dementia. One of the pathways linking diabetes and dementia may be related to inflammation. It is well known that type 2 diabetes is associated with inflammation. However, it is not known if people with type 2 diabetes have inflammation in the brain and whether this is associated with a person’s cognition. We are performing a study comparing cognition and brain inflammation using a special compound that detects inflammation on brain scans in people with and without type 2 diabetes.
