Thoracic Medicine

Lung disease is one of the highest health burdens in Australia affecting one in four adults. The Thoracic Medicine department at Frankston hospital conducts a variety of research into asthma and COPD and other respiratory conditions in conjunction with global pharmaceutical companies. The department also has links with leading universities and institutions studying disease prevalence and its impact to assess patient outcomes and to better understand the experience of patients living with lung disease.

There are a team of research nurses and respiratory scientists in the department working under the directorship of A/Prof David Langton. A/Prof Langton is a leading researcher into the ground-breaking bronchial thermoplasty procedure, a surgical intervention which has eased the suffering of many severe asthma sufferers on the Peninsula and around Australia.  In 2017, A/Prof Langton received an Order of Australia Medal for services to the community in respiratory medicine.

Our team are always looking for patients with Asthma and/or COPD to participate in trials, if you would like any information regarding these trials please contact us on 03 9784 7149.
